It's harvest time in Tuscany: let's make Schiacciata con l'Uva!

Autumn has just arrived and in every Tuscan family or backery shop the harvest time is celebrated with Schiacciata con l'Uva, an astonishingly rich, sinfully juicy wine grape pie whose country roots are clearly revealed by the dough and the crunchiness of the grape seeds.

Schiacciata con l'Uva is surely one of the nicest things about autumn and, if you are a food lover, you can't miss it!

This recipe, born around the wine growing areas of Florence and the Chianti is the sweet version of the tipical Schiacciata (that means "squashed" or "flattened"), is made with very simple ingredients: wine grapes, olive oil and bread.

Grape Focaccia (Schiacciata all'Uva)
Serves 6 to 8

Ingredients
450 grams of plain flour
brewer's yeast
1 kg of red grape wine
granulated sugar
fennel seeds
extra-virgin olive oil


Mix the flour with water, about 15 grams of diluted yeast and a tablespoon of oil. Knead the dough for fifteen minutes and then let it rise in a warm place for at least an hour. After rising time, grease a baking dish with the oil low and wide and stretch out half of the dough: distributed over two-thirds of the grains grapes (already washed and dried); break them with a fork to let out the juice, and sprinkle with some tablespoon of sugar.
Cover with the remaining dough, add the raisins, trying to get them to penetrate the dough, and sprinkle again with plenty of sugar and extra-virgin olive oil flush. Complete with a few fennel seeds.
Let rise for three quarters of an hour and bake in a preheated oven at 200 ° C for 30 minutes.

Magnificent mosaic floor unmasked in Siena Cathedral

If you come to Tuscany in the next months, do not miss the rare opportunity to see the spectacular Renaissance mosaics covering the marble floor in Siena’s cathedral. 

After the huge success of last year's opening, the magnificient floor will be visible to the public for another two-month period this summer, starting from 18th August and with purchase of a 7 euro Cathedral entrance ticket or Siena Combination Pass.

The 14,000 square feet of marble mosaics, made up of 56 panels,  usually covered to protect them from the thousands of visitors who visit the chatedral each year, depict vivid stories from the Bible and classical antiquity, in black, white, green, red and blue marble. 

 
The floor, which is unique in Italy, extends throughout the whole of the cathedral and took some 500 years to create, with local workmen including mainly Siena-native artists toiling on it from the 1300s to the 1800s. The historian Giorgio Vasari described it in his “Lives of Artists” as “the most beautiful, the greatest and most magnificent floor which was ever created.”
Although there are decorative geometric and floral elements, what makes this floor so startling are the figures: scenes from the Bible, allegories about fortune and ancient philosophers and symbols of Siena and its Ghibelline allegiance.

Remember to see the oldest mosaic, the “She-Wolf of Siena” (executed in around 1373), which shows the wolf suckling infants Romulus and Remus: myth has it that while Romulus founded Rome, Siena was founded by Remus’ son, Senius. 

The mosaics will be unmasked after the Palio di Siena horse race, until the end of October.

Enjoy a drink at the Uffizi Gallery!

After great success last year, the “Aperitivi ad Arte” or “cocktails with art” initiative returns to the Uffizi Gallery this summer. 

Every Thursday evening from 7 to 10 pm you can visit the museum’s eight rooms of sixteenth-century foreign painters and enjoy a drink on the Gallery’s terrace, above the Loggia dei Lanzi, which hosted the Grandukes of the Medici family between the 16th and 18th centuries. Just like in the olden days, there will be music, wonderful views of the city and the stunning scent of the surrounding citrus plants!
You have also the chance to visit the Red Rooms, the brand new room, just opened, dedicated to Italian 16th century artists such as Raphael, Bronzino, Rosso Fiorentino, Allori, Vasari, Andrea del Sarto and Pontormo.
The Aperitivo ad Arte also can be enjoyed at the Accademia Gallery while viweing Michelangelo’s David or from August 6 at the National Museum of the Bargello also viewing works by Michelangelo, Donatello and others.

Accademia Gallery opens its doors until September 25, every Wednesday. Do not miss the unique opportunity of an evening visit to the Hall of Prisoners and the David’s Tribune and an aperitif in the museum’s flowery courtyard.

Bargello National Museum – the courtyard of the Bargello will welcome you from August 6 to September 24, every Tuesday. The Michelangelo and the Renaissance Hall and the Hall of Donatello will be opened to visitors, while the aperitif will be offered in the spectacular courtyard.

Nel cuore del Chianti per Cantine Aperte!

Con l'arrivo della bella stagione che c'è di più bello di un pomeriggio in campagna tra prati verdeggianti ed alberi in fiore? 
Se si è poi anche appassionati di vino Cantine Aperte è l'occasione giusta per una giornata all'aria aperta! Cantine Aperte, che quest'anno si terrà domenica 26 maggio, è l'evento enoturistico più importante d'Italia. La manifestazione, organizzata dal Movimento Turismo Vino (MTV), riunisce appassionati e intenditori che vogliono conoscere il vino attraverso i suoi luoghi di produzione e la sua gente.

La Canonica di Cortine sorge proprio in mezzo al Chianti ed è circondata da una miriade di cantine e colline ricoperte da vigneti centenari..durante tutto l'anno scoprire i luoghi e le fasi di produzione del vino come la vendemmia o l'essiccazione dei grappoli per la preparazione del Vin Santo sono esperienze davvero emozionanti che portano indietro nel tempo, fino ai nostri nonni e bisnonni quando, con tanta premura e dedizione, lavoravano le loro vigne, trattandole quasi come dei figli! 

La domenica di Cantine Aperte è una giornata davvero interessante e divertente: ogni cantina che aderisce al circuito di MTV apre le proprie porte a coppie di giovani e gruppi di persone, organizzando iniziative artistiche e culturali quali mostre, concerti o particolari allestimenti oltre ovviamente alla degustazione dei vini e dei prodotti tipici della zona.

Da Cortine è facile muoversi un po' dappertutto, si raggiungono velocemente località famose come Greve in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti e Poggibonsi in cui non c'è che l'imbarazzo della scelta tra aziende vinicole, cantine e vigneti..

A Greve in Chianti vi consigliamo di visitare il suggestivo Castello di Verrazzano, un antico castello medievale appollaiato sulla sommità di una collina, proprio nel cuore del Chianti Classico. Pensate che il castello di Verrazzano è la casa del famoso navigatore Giovanni da Verrazzano che ha scoperto la Baia di New York!

Se invece preferite scender a sud ed approfittare per una visita a San Gimignano, potreste fermarvi a San Fabiano Calcinaia a Poggibonsi: oltre alla cantina aperta tutto il giorno è possibile fermarsi per pranzo ed assaggiare la vera cucina toscana. 

A Panzano, vicino alla storica Macelleria Cecchini, potrete trovare Villa di Vignamaggio, un'azienda agricola storica che produce vino fin dal 1400. La villa è un piccolo scrigno rinascimentale circondato da oltre 140 ettari di vigneti.... non ve ne pentirete!

Il Treno Natura, itinerari mozzafiato tra le terre di Siena

Avete mai sentito parlare dei piccoli Treni Natura che viaggiano tra le vallate senesi? Un viaggio indietro nel tempo, tra sbuffi, sedili di legno e percorsi ormai dimenticati dalle tratte ordinarie..Un viaggio affascinante per scoprire piccoli borghi medievali, feste paesane ed iniziative gastronomiche durante le varie fermate dell'antico trenino a vapore!

Da marzo è possibile ripercorrere gli itinerari di questo suggestivo viaggio su littorina d’epoca, una bella esperienza che parte da Siena e dura tutta la giornata, facendo sosta in paesini incantevoli, disseminati nella Val d'Orcia come San Quirico d'Orcia, Radicofani, Sant'Angelo, Asciano e tanti altri.

Ovviamente si viaggerà anche attraverso il bellissimo Parco Naturale culturale della Val d'Orcia, un'area naturale protetta a tutti gli effetti dove poter ammirare le bellezze naturali e storiche del territorio: un paesaggio di tipo collinare con forme dolci ed incisioni vallive poco accentuate , tipico c.d. "delle crete", interrotto casualmente dal fiume Orcia che da millenni attraversa l'intera vallata e da piccoli borghetti in cui è possibile leggere in chiave antropologica il lavoro dell'uomo su queste terre antiche.
 

Il treno parte sempre alle 9 del mattino ed è sempre abbinato ad un evento speciale, sagre e feste nei diversi comuni della provincia. E' possibile scendere e partecipare ad interessanti escursioni in pullman con cui raggingere le località interessate dai vari eventi in corso. Il rientro a Siena è previsto nel tardo pomeriggio (entro le ore 19:00).

Insomma con questo Treno Natura non c'è certo da annoiarsi, anzi! Lo consigliamo vivamente a tutti coloro che amano la natura e che vogliono vivere un'esperienza originale e divertente.
